What Ashton wants for Universal City
Fiscal Responsibility -
I want to make sure the city and city council members have exhausted every possible resource and thoroughly discussed options before asking taxpayers to pay more or pass new bonds. I want to be a part of doing research, looking at finances, and helping to cut waste. I want to make sure that items like contracts and ordinances have end dates and proper terms.
Lower Tax Rates- I have fought and advocated for lower taxes since before I was even on council. I will continue to vote for lower tax rates until we are more comparative to cities around us. My opponents Fitzpatrick and Goolsby have both advocated or voted for higher taxes in the past.
Less Restrictive Ordinances and Permits- I have and will continue to fight for less restrictive ordinances and permits for residents. I fought last year for no permits on small structures, I fought for no fence permits, however was outvoted by others on council. I will continue to vote to give residents more freedom from permits and ordinances. My opponents Fitzpatrick and Goolsby both have advocated or votes for more restrictive ordinances or permits.
Transparency -
I want citizen's to know that they can come to me with their concerns. I will do everything I can to make sure the citizen's voices are heard. Citizens deserve to get answers and have the city discuss their concerns. Finally, I also want to help the city become more transparent to its citizens.
Communication -
I want to help the city with its communication with citizens. Be it publishing information earlier, working on the city's website, or expanding marketing. I think the city needs to work on better ways to reach the citizenry. Publishing ahead of schedule and marketing in several places is the only way to ensure that any Universal City resident, who wants to be involved, can become involved. In this busy world, people need to be able to plan ahead, especially those with families.
Safety:-
Several citizens have talked to me about their concerns about safety in their neighborhoods. It seems the main issues are excessive speeds through neighborhood streets and crime. I believe both of these should become agenda topics for the city council to discuss. If I am elected, I am more than happy to bring up these issues to the city and council.
Golf Course-
My opponents would have you believe I want to close the Universal City municipal golf course. This is not true however, I do firmly believe that the golf course should be self sufficient and not a burden to the tax payers. Every year over a million of tax payer dollars goes towards funding the golf course, the golf course is not free to play, it should be covering it's own costs. Think about what that million dollars could go to i.e. fire trucks, police safety or even recreational programs for kids, teens and seniors.
